MEDALS AND RIBBONS
The Federation has numerous awards which fall into broad categories of valor, service and command. The categories are not exact or precise and some awards could logically fit into more than one category. To some extent, the multibple types of awards reflect the diverse history of the planets that make up the Federation (and the nations which, in previous times, made up those planets).
Most awards are medals hung on ribbon; for informal occasions, only a small recangular ribbon of the same color is worn. For multiple awards, a special symbol (often a plain star, although this does vary in some cases) is added to the ribbon to show each additional award.
There are two types of award in Starfleet use: individual awards, and unit commendations. Some awards may be applied as either, but that application must be noted on any material which informs another being of that award, such as a service jacket biography. Commanding officers are asked not to inform recipients that they are under evaluation for an award, and more often than not a commanding officer will not be aware that his unit is under consideration for a unit award.
